Conventions and Storyboarding!!

Type of Movie:

Thriller

Basic Conventions:

Characters

  •  Protagonist, antagonist, innocent victims, characters w/ dark past, psychotic individuals, terrorists and spies. Characters i will include are members in my group, Aiykiera, Jeremmiah, and as well as myself. I choose them because this causes ephemeral effort to look for other actors when we could be in it. May add a few background characters to make it reference an actual thriller movie scene. But we need to consider that everyone will be able to film at a certain time, so filming at night probably won't be the best idea.

Music/Sound

  • non-diegetic in the background
  • silence technique
  • "calm before the storm"

Lighting

  • lowkey lighting - creates mise-en-scene
  • shadows through lighting

Camera angles/movements

  • mimic the characters breathing
  • quickly tracking along a fight scene (dolly shot)
  • close ups and ECU

Mirrors

  • portrays the reflection of someone's soul (claustrophobic feeling)

Flash Backs

  •  insight of the characters past

Opening Sequences:

Other Films

In other films the opening scenes that I watched consists of handheld shots, non-diegetic, close ups, soft speaking, cutting on action, smash cuts, and lowkey lighting. For handheld shots they made it seem like you were experiencing the bumpiness and exotic feeling. The non-diegetic sounds were hard to pick up unless the characters were silent from time to time, creating eerie. They use close ups and cutting on action often. Smash cuts that were used were so sudden and unexpected making it almost startling. In one of the opening scenes "Old" lowkey lighting was used throughout the whole thing.

Revealing Meaning and Tone

Opening sequences reveal meaning and tone without giving away too much by the energy the set and the mise-en-scene. Mise-en-scene plays a big part because without it audiences wouldn't be able to decode the message and meaning to the movie or opening scene.

Action

It depends on the movie to say how much action happens in the first 2 minutes of a film. But I would say that for thriller not much really happens unless its an action thriller.

Setting(s) or Location(s):

The settings and locations of other films in thriller are often shot in the woods, ordinary suburbs and cities, deserts, and dark open spaces. Thriller is most often filmed during the night, rainy days or snowy days. I plan on doing my film in an abandoned house, hallways, class room, and bathroom.

About:

Audience

The intended audience for my film will be directed to teenagers. The choice of production company affect the way the audience engages with the film based on the how big the companies are and how they approach the audience with the film. If the production companies are well-known more people will be drawn to what they have to offer. It's like trying a new ice cream flavor, the more people you know that likes it the more you would want to try it and might like it at the end of trying it.

Movie Going Habits

 don't have one yet

How Will I Get Them To See The Film

I will get people to see it by telling people I know to share the news or post it on social media. Getting people to spread the news will be more effective people have connections whereas if I were to use social media only a number of people will see it. My film would be exhibited through the movie theaters and after its running time it will become available to stream on streaming services.

Titles:

Thriller Titles

Fonts used to create the titles include: Zachar, Lockdoor, Aachen, Bindlestiff NF etc. The title should include subtitles of main characters and the release date.

How social groups are represented:

Gender

Both genders are used. The female would often be seen as a victim being emotionally unstable, men are often seen as the antagonist they are shown to hold power.

Age

Teenagers are portrayed as the victims/weak characters because the circumstances are too big for them to handle they are also vulnerable to the situation. The movie Jaws did something like this which made the audience feel worried for the teenagers.

Class

Money/social class plays for the breakdown of relationships which could make the victim feel worse. Money is an act of a sub-narrative which underly the main problems of the film. Social class is used to sense that they are stuck ups and ungrateful.
